Ok people, here we go...
I get lots of questions about chocobo raising, so i'm writing out Martha's Little Guide to raising a choco. So far I've raised 4 (one yellow, 2 reds, and one blue). I'm going to keep this nice and simple, and give an overview of the easiest way i have found to care for your choco through each stage of life. For more in depth info, search FFXICLOPEDIA for the complete rundown.
There are three basic strategies for chocobo raising, based mainly on what you intend to do with your animal once it is an adult: Runners, Diggers, and Racers. Runners are raised for physical attributes (strength and endurance), and benefit from the gallop and canter abilities. Diggers are raised for mental attributes (discernment and receptivity), and benefit from the bore and burrow abilities. Racers are raised for balanced attributes, and typically benefit from physical abilities. Most players choose to raise a Runner for day to day transportation needs.
To begin raising a chocobo, you must first obtain an egg. This can be acomplished in a variety of ways (see FFXICLOPEDIA for complete info on this) but I would suggest breeding a chocobo from existing stock (ie, ask me for a male card, and another ls member for a female card) in order to start with the best offspring. It is my observation that chocobo color and abilities are inherited from the parents, so if you want a specific color or ability, start with parents that have those traits. Once you have obtained your egg, take it to the trainer in your home city and trade him/her the egg to begin incubating. The incubation period last for four RL days. During this time, it is best to check with the trainer each day and care for the egg by "watching over the egg" in order to build up your relationship with your chocobo early on. This will make the later stages of training much more easy to accomplish.
On day 4, your egg will hatch into a chocobo chick. The chick phase lasts from day 4 until day 19, when your chick grows into a teenager. This is the stage at which training begins, and the three types of chocos begin to be differentiated. In the following paragraphs, I will decribe the feeding and training regimines neccessary to train your chocobo to your needs.
Runners:
1)During the chick phase of development:
a)feed your chick 1 ball of carrot paste each RL day
b)place your chick on the "walk in town" careplan for the duration of this lifephase
c)take your chick on as many "short walk"s as its stamina will allow
2)During the teenage phase of development:
a)feed your choco 3 Vomp carrots each RL day
b) place your choco on the following care regimen: 5 days of "carry packages" followed by 7 days of "Walk through Town". Continue to alternate plans following this regimen throughout the duration of this lifephase
c)take your choco on as many "medium walk"s and "short walks" as its stamina will allow
3)During the adult phase of development: continue to train your chocobo as you did during it's teenage phase, supplementing the care with "Long walks" as well.
* notes on runners: during the teenage phase of development, the chocobo should hit average on both strength and endurance. This will result in larger talons and an extra row of tail feathers.
Ok, i'm lazy now, so i'll add in the rest of the choco types in a day or two, along with some pictures to show choco development.
